The Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Programs in the DEQ Waste and Underground Tank Management Bureau agree with the Federal guidelines. The clean-up residue can simply be placed in the household garbage for disposal. The department also recommends that powdered sulfur be sprinkled over the spill area fifteen (15)minutes prior to the final clean up of the broken CFL. Sulfur forms an amalgam with the mercury particles forming larger particles that are less likely to be dispersed by a vacuum cleaner exhaust. Powdered sulfur can be found at most hardware or garden stores.
